German Shepherd Dog (or GSD as it is commonly known) is a breed of working dog long-associated with Germany. A large-sized dog, strong, highly intelligent and very trainable, the GSD has been favoured for sheep-farming in Germany for centuries.
Another (now disused) name for the GSD is 'Alsatian'. The GSD is ranked third most intelligent dog after the border collie and poodle. GSDs do however require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
If you are looking to buy a GSD as a working dog or for companinionship, it is good to get a pure-bred GSD or one with pedigree. Lists of breeders can be found on the Dogs Victoria and GSDVC websites.
